Chicken breeds & eggs | | The best breeds for laying hens are Leghorns, Rhode Island Reds, Austrolorps and Orpingtons. Heirloom breeds are also very popular for backyard farms as are bantams. Our Nellies are hybrid brown hens similar to Rhode Island Reds.
Rhode Island Red, Austrolorp and Orpington hens lay brown eggs. Leghorns lay white eggs. Araucana and Ameraucana hens lay blueish-green eggs. And bantams lay tiny brown eggs. The choice is yours.
All hens start off laying small eggs, and egg size increases until the hens reach maturity. Once they're mature, most hens will lay close to an egg a day.
